This type of candlestick was originally designed by Philip Webb as a part of the furnishings for William and Jane Morris’s Red House, Bexleyheath, Kent. Webb’s account book lists a design for candlesticks on 28 June 1863, for which he charged £1.10s. This pair in copper were given as a wedding present by Philip Webb to the architect Charles Winmill and his wife. Another pair, originally purchased from the Firm by Burne-Jones, are now in the Victoria & Albert Museum (M. 1130 & A-1926). For an identical single example in brass see H2.
