The lithograph is based on the photograph taken by Frederick Hollyer in 1887 showing Morris at the age of 53; the photo was afterwards used by Emery Walker as an illustration in ‘The Complete Works of William Morris’. A letter from Walter Crane congratulating Rowe on his ‘striking and focible likeness’ is also in the WMG collection (see J608)
