This cartoon was developed from one of the figures in the scene of The Three Marys at the Empty Sepulchre which Morris designed for a window at St Michael & All Angels, Brighton (1862). This single figure was used for the East window of Bradford Cathedral (1864) where it appeared in the top tier at the extreme right.
The East window at Bradford was altered when a Lady chapel was added built to the design of Sir Edward Maufe: following removal, cleaning and restoration, the stained glass was re-fitted in the 3 windows forming the East window of the Lady chapel, in 1964.
Other cartoons for these windows in the WMG collection are as follows: St Joseph (A5) St Luke (A10), St (A12), St Peter (A19) and Isaiah (A22).
A drapery study for A23 is now in the Sandford L Berger collection, California, together with two designs for the whole Bradford East window – the first showing most of the figures only very roughly indicated, narrower borders, no diagonal bands of lettering in the quarry backgrounds and a series of seraphs with shields and scrolls in the tracery; the second, more finished sketch design shows the window as executed, except that the figures of Ezekial and Daniel in the bottom tier are in the opposite order to their position in the finished window.
