Tile is painted in ruby lustre on white slip with four-square design of alternating pattern of a rose head and a leaf scroll, the former against a ruby ground, the latter against a white ground. De Morgan produced this tile during his Chelsea period (1871-1881), when he worked from his home in Cheyne Walk. The tile is painted on a blank, possibly from Poole Pottery- another tile with this design is in The De Morgan Foundation and stamped with Poole Pottery’s mark.
