This monochrome design in ochre and black is for a wallpaper or possibly a printed velveteen. It was designed by Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo for the Century Guild, it features a twisted stem with flowers, in the background the ‘CG’ monogram is incorporated into the design.

Century Guild designer, Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo’s ivy wallpaper design was never put into production. It is similar to fellow Century Guild artists Herbert Horne’s Bay Leaf wallpaper (see B26a), with its simple foliage shapes on a red background.

The classical/Rennaisance design references of the dolphin are in contrast to the ‘organic’ intracacies of Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo’s earlier designs for the Century Guild. In the 1890s both Mackmurdo and his partner Herbert Horne evolved towards classically-inspired formalism.
