The cartoon was designed by Morris (WM 73) for Bradford Cathedral, east window, installed in 1864. It features: Full length standing figure of prophet with curling hair and beard, in three-quarter profile to right, in long robe and cloak, the latter drawn across the upper part of the body and falling over right arm, holding in both hands diagonally a scroll inscribed in Gothic lettering: for unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given
Two entries in the Morris & Co. minute book refer to Morris’s work for this window (Minute Book now in collection of the Huntingdon, California). Under 1 April, 1863 reference is made to the allotting of the single figures as follows:
“Rossetti: Jacob, Mary Magdalene, Martha at £3 each; Ned: Virgin Mary, David at £3 each; Marshall: St. Peter, Moses, Solomon, Anna at £2 each; Morris: Elijah, Mary sister of Martha, Joseph at £2 each; Brown: Abraham, Isaac, Elizabeth, paul if he will accept them”
The next entry, 15 April, 1863 notes: “Distribution of 4 major Prophets for Bradford East window: Ezekial and Daniel to Rossetti for £3. Isaiah & Jeremiah to Morris for the small sum of £2”
Two sketch designs for the window are also in the collection of TheH untingdon. The first shows most of the figures only very roughly indicated, narrower borders, no diagonal bands of lettering in quarry backgrounds, and a series of seraphs with shields and scrolls in the tracery. The second sketch, much more carefully drawn, shows the window as executed except that the figures of Ezekial and Daniel in the bottom tier are in the opposite order.
The Isaiah appeared in the sidelights of the East windowon the bottom tier. The East window lights are however no longer extant, the window having been altered when a new Lady Chapel, designed by Sir Edward Maufe, was added; following removal, cleaning and restoration the stained glass was re-fittedinto the three windows forming the East window of the Lady chapel in 1964.
