Burne-Jones drew the caricature on or shortly after the evening of Thursday 1 November, when Morris gave the lecture on ‘Tapestry and Carpet-Weaving’ at the first Arts & Crafts Exhibition, held at the New Gallery in Regent Street, London. The paper is watermarked 1888 and printed with the address 27 Young Street./ Kensington Sq. W. This was the Mackail’s address between 1880-1898. Mr & Mrs JW Mackail were the son-in-law and daughter of Edward Burne-Jones.
