This sketch is one of a series of six similarly occupied female figures planned as a set, to be called ‘The Garland’ but never completed in this form. They were adapted from designs for stained glass in the Green Dining Room of the South Kensington Museum (now the V&A) commissioned from Morris & Co. in 1866 as part of the scheme of the decoration for the room undertaken by the Firm.
