It is not known precisely when William Morris designed Rose and Thistle, however the original design in the Victoria and Albert Museum is marked ’26 Queens Square’, so it must have been designed before Morris & Co. moved to Merton Abbey in June 1881. This example was formerly in the collection of Lucy Faulkner Orrinsmith (1839-1910), an artist friend of William Morris and who also worked for his firm.
