Arthur John Smith (1846-1919) was one of Morris’s comrades in the Socialist League and the Hammersmith Socialist League. He was a sculptor and exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1873 and 1902, including a bronze version of this plaster ‘medallion’ portrait of William Morris in 1891 and a bust of Morris in 1901 (a version of which is also in the William Morris Gallery’s collection S36).
